- History -
Right, let’s get one thing straight. Picking the name for your band is a pain in the arse. We formed as bunch blokes who wanted to make a bit of a racket, back in October 2005. It started off as me. Joff and Pete. Pete got a lovely lad called Jamie involved and we also found a drummer called Chillie. So we practice and during fag breaks we talk about band names. Ever had this kind of conversation :
“What about Top Shelf?”
“That’s shit!”
“I like it”
“Well I’m not being a band called fucking top shelf!”
“All right what about Sister Feelings Call”
“We’re not fucking Goth band you know”
“I like it”
“That’s shit!”
And so on.
The name Some Great Reward stuck in January when we got one of Joffs mates to do the artwork and no one had come up with a better one. However we still have conversations like :
“I’m still not sure about that name you know”
“Please, please, please fuck off!”.
Right so then what happened. Well Jamie on bass couldn’t keep time with the drummer. Then he missed a practice, so we got someone else. Nick he was, and probably is, still called. Lovely lad. Turned up late for practices when he turned up. Cracking bass player mind. Jamie moved onto acoustic guitar. Lovely lad Jamie, no sense of timing.
By then end of January the bossy old blokes in the band (me and Joff basically) got fed up with an elusive, disinterested rhythm section (who didn’t really like any of the songs, weird how disinterested and playing stuff you think is shit are linked innit?) and an acoustic guitar player with no sense of timing. We decided to cut our losses go back into the studio record some more tunes and work as a 3 piece until we could find the right personnel. That was two months ago.
So right now we’ve got a new bass player. Andy his name is. He’s good as well, he can keep time and everything. We’ve decided, as lovely lad as he is, to invite Jamie to help in the studio only (he’s a dab hand with a kettle and some tea bags apparently). We’ve also got 8 tunes recorded and in the throws of being finely polished as well as another 6 or so waiting for some vocals. So the studio side is looking pretty good. We still don’t have a drummer, but you never know we might be able to find some bloke who can hit upturned biscuit barrel to some kind of steady rhythm. The idea of being ready to gig by the summer seems pretty far away at the moment, but the deadline for the end of summer as the finalising of the album looks well within our capabilities. Here’s hoping.
